NRVCS Prevention will be hosting a series of upcoming community dialogues about substance misuse and addiction.

According to the agency’s Communications & Outreach Coordinator, Mike Wade, “Addiction: A Community Conversation,” will be offered in all five jurisdictions served by NRVCS. Wade explains that each event will feature presentations on the science of addiction and available treatment options, as well as recovery. The events will also include a panel discussion that will provide an opportunity for audience members to ask questions or share concerns.

NRVCS’ Glenn Mathews, service line manager of the agency’s services for substance use disorders (SUDs), and Chris Alderman, supervisor of the 401 Peer Recovery Center, will be the featured presenters. Panelists at each event will vary.

Wade adds that community members who attend will also be treated to a free meal, thanks to funding provided by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services’ Office of Behavioral Health Wellness.

“Our goal is to help the public understand addiction as a disease and not a moral failing or character flaw,” Wade notes. “Addiction is no different from other common diseases – like heart disease, diabetes or cancer – but unfortunately, most of our society tends to look at addiction – and those who suffer from it – much differently.”

“And, because we know each of our five localities are rather diverse from one another, I fully expect that each conversation will be equally unique,” continues Wade.

“That’s important to keep in mind,” he adds. “While we’re bound to see similarities among our communities, we also know that the concerns or suggestions from folks who attend these events will vary.”

While there is no cost to attend these events, RSVPs are requested in order to make adequate plans for food. Individuals interested in attending can RSVP by clicking on the link for their preferred location below:
