Letters from Our Alumni...

Alycia B -
I am living in Woodbridge, VA.

I am a full-time student at Argosy University in Washington DC getting my Master's in Professional Counseling. I am also working part time as an administrative assistant at Eye Associates (opthalmology office) My goals right now include getting my masters and then continuing on to get my Doctorate of Education in Marriage and Family Counseling. I want to have my own practice some day and also be a professor.

Interesting news/tidbits: I am going to be an auntie for the first time! My sister and her husband are having their first kid in July!! Also I am happy in a new relationship with my boyfriend Sean. :) And I have a new kitten (looks just like the cat from Meet the Parents...and her name is also Jinxy!!) Memories of the RAFT-Gosh, where do I begin?? I will always remember the fun times I had there with the rest of the crew chiefs, Sarah, and the volunteers.

I always felt at "home" when I was there. One fond memory is when Kristie Harris and I went to the Poker Run!! Also I have fond memories of training (loved it!!)

I miss the RAFT so much and hope to be able to come back and visit soon!

I'm living back in Poquoson, Virginia (Hampton Roads) and am attending grad school at Regent University.  I'm attempting to get my Master's in Management, and I'm working part time as a Graduate Assistant in the Human Resources department there.  My big goal right now is to finish by the end of the summer so I can move into a position where I can use my undergrad and master's degrees in some sort of human service field.

My big news is that I got engaged!  Woohoo!  We are planning a fall 2007 wedding. : )

A favorite RAFT memory? Sheesh, how do I pick from all the fun times?  I would have to say the one that sticks out right now is our very last volunteer meeting where we played train wreck.  It got brutal, but Alicia always managed to end up in the middle.  Also, shout out to Verna, watching Oprah and Dr. Phil on Monday afternoons.  Yeah, baby.

Right now I'm a full time graduate student at Norfolk State University in the Community Counseling Master's program.  I still live in Chesapeake and have started working at The Barry Robinson Center (residential treatment facility for children).  I also work with an after school program with Chesapeake Parks and Recreation.  My goal is to earn my Psy.D in Clinical Psychology.

I am living in Chapel Hill, NC now.  I am still getting settled in and exploring my new area, but there is just so much to see and do here.  I finished both masters programs I was working on (Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences and Health Education and Promotion) and am now job hunting.  Chapel Hill has a lot of health behavior programs with the community here and so I am looking into some of these positions.  Hopefully one of them will be a good match for me soon (I'm excited to get started!)

My interests still center around community health issues and how I can help people make healthier choices.  And then, of course, there is dancing - I am still dancing here (clogging, salsa, swing, contra...)and loving it!  As for future goals, for the time being that mainly involves my current job hunt for a position in the community to address local health concerns.

My most exciting recent news is to have finally completed all of the requirements for my two masters programs and the recent move to Chapel Hill (I love it here!).  That being said, I miss Blacksburg already.  I have so many ties to the community there and so many great memories.

Raft was a fantastic opportunity for me to be involved in the community that gave so much to me.  It's important to me that organizations such as Raft exist because they are part of what holds our community together.  I see Raft as an invaluable resource to the community and I'm honored to have been able to make a contribution.

I’m back in Jacksonville, Florida, I love the sun!  I’m teaching earth science to ninth graders at my old high school.  I am also helping to coach the school’s swim, soccer, and flag football team.  What can I say, it keeps me busy!  My goals right now are to survive my first year of teaching, get my permanent teaching certificate, go back to grad school, and make it to as many VT football games as possible!   I really enjoyed my time at the hotline, Sarah was a cool manager!  But to be short and to the point, I like talking to old friends, having fun doing role plays at training, practically living at Raft during training last spring, selling raffle tickets with a busted eye (good times), and of course - PK’s pizza parties!!

I am now living in Boston and going to Boston College for my Masters in mental health counseling. (not exactly sure yet what I would like to do with my masters- I know counseling, but not sure which population yet).

I loved being a part of the RAFT.  It was a great group of people who were all dedicated and loved the field.  The training was quick but very valuable for my job in the RAFT and I still find the skills and information of use today in graduate school.
