Potential health risks of energy
drinks are cause for alarm
The U.S. energy drink market is
currently worth nearly $10 billion
in annual sales and beverage giants
from Coca-Cola to Anheuser-Busch are
vying for their share. Health
officials and youth advocates warn
that consumption of these
high-caffeine drinks - many of which
also contain high volumes of alcohol
- can lead to potentially
devastating health issues.

What is
Prevention?
Prevention
programs utilize strategies designed to reduce problems
related to alcohol, tobacco, or other drug use, mental
disorders, physical illness, or violence and abuse; to
inform the general public of problems associated with
these issues, thereby raising awareness; or to intervene
with at-risk or identified individuals to reduce
identified concerns.
Prevention programs
strive to reduce individual, family, and environmental
risk factors, increase resiliency and enhance protective
factors, and achieve individual and comprehensive
community wellness through a team or collaborative
approach. These programs are proactive, evidence-based,
and outcomes are measurable.
NRVCS Prevention programs cover all five communities in
the New River Valley: Floyd County, Giles County,
Montgomery County, Pulaski County, and Radford City. Children and families are served through Prevention
Services in public schools and in the community. |
