NRVCS (New River Valley Community Services) is now offering an addictions recovery discussion and support group for members of the community.
Based on the Self-Management for Addictions Recovery Training program – SMART Recovery – the group is for individuals who are challenged with addiction and addictive behaviors. These may include alcohol and other drugs, as well as gambling, Internet use, sexual addiction, and problematic eating behavior.
The weekly meetings last an hour and are facilitated by trained, volunteer discussion hosts. Discussions focus on four major topics: building and maintaining motivation; coping with urges; managing thoughts, feelings and behaviors; and living a balanced life.
SMART Recovery meetings are held on Sunday afternoons from 4 – 5 p.m. in the New River Room of NRVCS’ Montgomery Center (700 University City Boulevard, Blacksburg). Meetings are open to interested members of the community and are free of charge, but small donations to help cover expenses are welcome and appreciated.
